From The New Humanitarian, published on 24 November 2021

‘We need to ensure that we put communities in the driver’s seat of their peacebuilding efforts. We don’t stop and listen. How do they want to do this?’

It’s estimated that 80 percent of humanitarian needs worldwide are driven by conflict. And while conflict prevention and resolution is a top UN priority, big UN-led peace processes – from Syria to Yemen – have seen limited success in recent years.

Is the traditional approach towards peacebuilding well suited to today’s complex, fragmented conflicts, especially those linked to radicalism and extreme ideologies?

In this episode, host Heba Aly explores whether hyper-local peace deals can be a viable alternative to the “Big Peace” of the past. What can we learn from local peacebuilding efforts? What are the challenges? What does success look like?

Guests: Danjuma Dawop, local peacebuilder for Mercy Corps in Nigeria; Obi Anyadike, senior Africa editor at The New Humanitarian.
